The picture alongside shows the many polyps in the bowel of a patient diagnosed with familial adenomatous polyposis, which goes on to cause cancer of the colon. These polyps grow over time and turn into cancer of the bowel. Colonoscopic screening and genetic studies must without fail be carried out in the family members of these patients.
