Fatty liver means more fat than normal has built up in the liver cells.
- Grade 1: mild fatty change.
- Grade 2: moderate fatty change.
- Grade 3: marked (advanced) fatty change.
Important: the grade of fat on ultrasound does not show how much the liver is damaged or whether cirrhosis has developed.
Fatty liver usually causes no symptoms. In some people, however, it can lead to liver damage over time.
It is recommended that you see a gastroenterologist with your ultrasound report. Your doctor will assess your condition with blood tests and, if needed, tests that measure the stiffness of the liver.
