Cytotec

Cytotec was produced in 1990. It comes as 100 and 200 mg tablets. It is used to prevent the harm that aspirin and the other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) do to the stomach. It is not a narcotic drug, it is not habit-forming and it does not affect sexual function. It is not an antacid, it does not prevent duodenal ulcers from forming, and it is not used in their treatment.

How it works

The stomach has its secretions for digesting food, and to keep those secretions from harming the stomach there is a protective layer of mucus over its lining. Anti-rheumatic drugs weaken this layer of mucus, so that the stomach acid and its own juices damage the stomach and cause ulcers to develop.

Substances called prostaglandins play a part in keeping up the thickness of the stomach’s acid and mucus layer. NSAIDs destroy these prostaglandins and so make damage to the stomach easier. The NSAIDs most often used are aspirin, the sodium and potassium naproxen compounds (Voltaren, Cataflam, Apranax and the like), ibuprofen and others. Patients taking this group of drugs, particularly those over 60, are at risk of gastric ulcer and bleeding.

How it is used

The drug has to be taken between meals, so that diarrhoea from the drug is prevented. If it has to be taken at night, something light should be eaten along with it. Diarrhoea is generally seen in the first week after starting the drug and settles of its own accord even though the drug is continued. Antacids containing magnesium (such as magnesium calcined) make the diarrhoea more marked still.

Side effects

The side effects depend on the dose. If you see side effects, telephone your doctor.

• Severe diarrhoea
• Bleeding from the vagina after the menopause

These are among the side effects. To prevent diarrhoea, take the drug with food without fail. Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and continuing diarrhoea are among the other side effects.

Take care

Do not take Cytotec if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Cytotec can cause miscarriage and severe bleeding. Cytotec taken while breastfeeding can cause diarrhoea in the baby.

Never share your Cytotec with anyone else. This drug was prescribed for your own particular situation.
