The picture shows a lumen in the gullet narrowed down to the size of a bird’s eye (a stricture). Among the causes of this narrowing may be corrosive substances (the swallowing of acid or alkali) and advanced reflux disease.
Among the methods of treatment, depending on the patient’s condition, are balloon and bougie dilatation, the placing of a stent, and surgery.
