Plummer–Vinson Syndrome

In some people with long-standing iron-deficiency anaemia, a tough web forms in the upper part of the gullet that blocks the food they eat from passing down and causes difficulty in swallowing. This is called Plummer–Vinson syndrome.

During endoscopic examination the web is perforated as the endoscope is pushed down, and the treatment is thereby done. Sometimes the web can be very tough and dilatation with bougies may be needed. Iron treatment should be given as well.
