Certain drugs, particularly those of the tetracycline group, lodge in the gullet when they are not taken down with enough water and cause local damage and ulceration; oesophagitis from drugs — pill oesophagitis — develops in this way.
In the pictures below you see the damage caused in the gullet by drugs. In the first picture the mark left by a drug that lodged in the gullet can be made out.
