In patients whose immunity is reduced (through diabetes, uraemia, tuberculosis, a tumour, chemotherapy and the like), the inside of the gullet becomes covered with widespread white exudates, as though cotton wool had been strewn over it. The cause of this is the fungus called Candida albicans settling in the gullet.

The diagnosis is made from the endoscopic appearance and from examination by the pathologist of biopsies taken through the lesions.
