Normal gastroscopy image
This image shows the normal inside structure of the gullet, the stomach and the duodenum. No ulcer, mass or obvious inflammation is seen. A normal gastroscopy does not, however, mean that stomach complaints will necessarily go away.
What is a normal gastroscopy?
Gastroscopy is an examination of the inside lining of the gullet (oesophagus), the stomach and the duodenum with a thin camera.
A normal gastroscopy means that no ulcer, mass, obvious inflammation or other significant structural abnormality that can be seen by eye was found in these organs.
My gastroscopy is normal but my complaints continue. Why?
A normal gastroscopy does not mean that every disease of the digestive system has been ruled out.
Complaints such as stomach pain, burning, bloating, nausea and feeling full quickly may come from functional dyspepsia, some types of reflux, food intolerances or problems with the movement of the stomach.
In addition, some diseases can only be found with a biopsy or other tests.
Is a biopsy needed?
Even when everything looks normal at gastroscopy, a biopsy may be taken in some cases to look for Helicobacter pylori infection, coeliac disease or other microscopic changes.
When should you see a doctor?
If your complaints continue, you are advised to see a gastroenterologist.
If there are signs such as difficulty in swallowing, unexplained weight loss, vomiting blood or black stools, you should be assessed without delay.
Remember: a normal gastroscopy is usually good news. Sometimes, however, further tests may be needed to find the cause of your complaints.
